What you'll be doing
- Evaluation, examination, description, dissection, and sectioning of the gross tissue in both surgical and autopsy pathology for the microscopic evaluation and review by the pathologist. Serve as an assistant to pathology fellow and resident in their training in gross surgical and autopsy pathology. Perform various auxiliary function such as photography and specimen radiology, perform various training, supervisory and administrative function. Provide independent technical leadership, consulting with the manager or supervisor on unusual and complex case, such as oncology case where the tumor has spread into other organ, cancer that extend into surrounding structure, autopsy on complicated case, and initial intra operative examination and tissue banking for uncommon specimen of interest to research such as wide section melanomas and thoracic biopsy. Provide ongoing training and orientation to the pathology assistant team member. Perform duty according to the policy and procedure of the pathology department and hospital including compliance and confidentiality. Participate in and perform frozen section, intra operative consultation, autopsy and prenatal procedure. File and retrieve surgical and autopsy material and maintain accurate record of all such activity. Assist with development of quality assurance monitor, quality control monitor, data gathering and preparation of QA report, input for performance review, budget preparation and monitoring, regulatory compliance and continuing education and training. Ensure that test is prepared properly at all stage from specimen collection through result reporting, and perform additional special handling of the specimen if necessary or requested. Perform the proper operation, repair and replacement, and preventative maintenance of area equipment and tool. Maintain record log for the equipment. Competent at operating the laboratory information system and medical archival retrieval system relative to the function of the pathology assistant team. Continually provide and participate in on the job training conference, seminar and continuing education to ensure competence and awareness of most recent technology and advance in the field. Other duty as assigned.
What your background should be
- 5 years clinical experience in anatomic or clinical pathology is required. Act 34 criminal clearance, Am society clinical pathology PA (ASCP) required. Analytical and technical ability necessary to independently evaluate patient specimen and clinical data to appropriate sample tissue relevant to diagnostic evaluation and recognize organ and tissue anomalies.
Required Schooling / Training
- Graduate of a NAACLS accredited. Bachelor degree in biological science or medical technology or a related field.
