What you'll be doing
- Perform direct patient care on non-intensive care patient which include aspect of respiratory therapy according to physicians' order. Diagnose lungs and breathing disorders and recommending treatment methods. Interview patients and doing chest physical exam to determine what kind of therapy is best for their condition. Consult with physicians to recommend a change in therapy based on your evaluation of the patient. Analyze breath, tissue and blood specimens to determine levels of oxygen and other gases. Manage ventilator and artificial airway device for patient who cannot breathe normally on their own. Respond to code blue, medical response teams or other urgent call for care. Educate patient and family about lung disease so patient can maximize their recovery.
What your background should be
- Must have completed one full semester of clinical education in respiratory school program.
Required Schooling / Training
- High school diploma plus current enrollment in a technical school of respiratory care required.
