What you'll be doing
- The pharmacy technician for inpatient care performs medication managements. The candidate reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on pharmacy copy of prescription/order. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment. Compounds and reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile) with a secondary review by a pharmacist. After prescription/orders are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and converts the order, if necessary, so that the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered. S/he answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. This position conducts monthly ward inspection of patient care areas. Maintains, verifies, stocks and replaces outdates inpatient care area and automated dispensing machines (adm). Monitors inventory needs in patient care areas (i.e. Wards, clinics), relays this information to the pharmacy procurement technician. Orders inventory needs during his/her absence. S/he monitors refrigerator temperature on a daily basis in pharmacy areas. Assists in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services. Delivers and dispenses all patient orders and requests for controlled substances. Conducts regularly scheduled inventories and interacts with controlled substance vault pharmacy technicians. The incumbent performs all the duties of a lower graded technician if required.
What your background should be
- Certificate by the national pharmacy technician certification board (ptcb) is required at grades gs-6. For gs-5 level and gs-4 level, this job requires 1 year of work experience. The applicant should have the ability to solve problems and make recommendations (e.g. Troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action). S/he should have knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment, knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials. The incumbent should have knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. S/he should have knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
Required Schooling / Training
- High school diploma or equivalent, or bachelor degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology.
