What you'll be doing

The intern will support various research studies involving the analysis and evaluation of the impact of computerized clinical systems on the quality of patient care. Current projects underway include evaluating the effectiveness of automated telephone outreach to patients or physician reminders on appropriateness of patient care for hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The potential contribution of computerized prescriber order entry systems on medication errors, and assessing clinician satisfaction with the companies ambulatory electronic medical record. The intern will support activities associated with the research studies which may include: data collection, database development, data analysis, chart reviews, developing internal review board (IRB) amendments, literature searches and administrative tasks. Principal duties may vary depending on the assigned project. The associate director and research project managers will work with the Intern to identify research activities of particular interest to the Intern that also meet the goals of the internship. May assist in data collection efforts, data cleaning, and descriptive data analysis. May perform data abstraction from a variety of sources, including patient medical records, hospital clinical information systems, and surveys. Performs general topic searches and specialized database searches. Retrieves journal articles from the Internet. Maintains a bibliographic database of supporting material. May assist with the preparation of formal research reports and manuscripts for publication in professional journals. Strong writing skills helpful. Helps with the preparation of talks and presentation materials including PowerPoint slides, and tables and graphs. Photocopying, electronic mailing, receiving and sending mail, scheduling meetings, faxing and other administrative duties as required. Will assist with preparing the forms for obtaining approval from the internal review board (IRB) for study protocols.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect. Good oral and written communication skills. Organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks. Capability to work independently and to complete work and to meet deadlines. Competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access preferred. Experience using medical bibliographic retrieval programs is helpful. An interest in healthcare and the use of technology to support clinical care. Pre-medical training or experience in social sciences preferred.
