What you'll be doing
- Provides communication transfer of classroom assignments, procedures and teachers explanations; tutoring of presented academic instruction for classroom assignments; communicate transfer through reverse voicing of D/HH students questions and responses; assists teaching staff in a variety of classroom and school related activities to include supervision of D/HH students test taking, accompanying student for interpreting service at the office, nurse, counselor, support staff, and athletic coaches; monitors/assists with FM systems and hearing aids; maintains safety and discipline by supervising and/or assisting in the supervision of students on playgrounds, in lunch rooms, school halls, library, and during busing; corrects papers; enforces school rules and regulations; operates common office machines; performs clerical duties as assigned. Acts as liaison between general education teachers, resource teachers and teachers of the hearing impaired; previews instructional information for needed sign vocabulary or sign invention when possible; attends seminars and conferences, views challenging instructional sign language materials to maintain and increase signing and reverse abilities.
What your background should be
- Post high school training in sign language is desirable. Previous experience in an educational setting with D/HH students. A typical qualifying entrance background would include completion of formal or informal training in signing for the deaf or hard of hearing; completion of college level course work in auditory disabilities, signing, deaf studies, or closely related fields; and experience gained through performing services for the deaf or hard of hearing. Knowledge of: various forms of communicating with the deaf through visual means (Signed English, SEE, MSE, PSE, ASL, or CUE); hearing disorders and their effects on learning and behavior; skills taught in the basic subjects included in elementary and secondary school curriculum; record keeping techniques; and computer skills. Possession of, or ability to obtain CPR Certification and certified by the National Association of the Deaf or its successor organization as having a level of proficiency in providing interpreting services at level 2; Passed the Cued Language Transliteration National Certification examination administered by the Testing, Evaluation, and Certification Unit, Inc.Light work to include changing diapers, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 25 pounds.

- Associate of Arts degree degree in Deaf Studies or high school diploma or a general equivalent diploma
