What you'll be doing
- Assign codes for diagnoses, treatments and procedures according to the appropriate classification system for outpatient encounters. Utilize technical coding principals and APC reimbursement expertise to assign appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnoses and ICD-9-CM/CPT-4 procedures. Identifies chargeable items for emergency department visits and enter into billing system. Extracts required information from sources documentation and enters into encoder and abstracting system. Reviews daily system-generated error reports to correct or complete missing data elements. Assists in implementing solutions to reduce back-end billing errors. Abides by the standards of ethical coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and adheres to official coding guidelines.
What your background should be
- At least, two years of progressive on-the-job experience. RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P or CCA certification status preferred. Minimum 2-4 years experience coding with ICD-9-CM system, DRGs and knowledge of CPT-4.
Required Schooling / Training
- Associate degree or equivalent training
