What you'll be doing

Operate a passenger vehicle to transport passengers in urban and rural areas of federal, state and county roads and city streets in all traffic conditions. Operate various motor vehicles and drive over highways, public roads, military instillations and in close quarters and heavy traffic on both long and short hauls. Work a shuttle bus, cars, vans, pick ups and a box truck over local heavy trafficked roads and possible long trips to other VA offices within a 400 mile distance. Verify each patient appointment and eligibility to use the transportation system and have each rider sign in specifically for each leg of the trip. Transport and deliver to destination patients, employees, records, mail, supplies, lab specimens, drugs, instruments and equipment. Assists none ambulatory patients from wheelchairs into cars and out again. Carry out first echelon maintenance (monitor fluid levels, inspect tires, safety equipment, monitor gauges, etc.). Schedule services and repairs for vehicles, drive vehicles to scheduled appointments, and report the mileage to the Motor Fleet Vehicle manager or designee each month. Familiar with the height, width, length and weight of the vehicle in order to judge overhead and side clearances, the turning radius, braking distance and safest distance to be maintained from other vehicles.

What your background should be

Must be able to pick up 50 pounds. Heavier weight will be handled with assistance. specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X 118C. You must have a valid Class D Driving license, issued by the state of Alaska.
