What you'll be doing

The Pain Medicine NP/PA plans, directs and manages the clinical activities of the Outpatient Pain Management Service. The NP/PA works in conjunction with the Medical Director to provide an advanced level of care to patients undergoing pain medicine therapies. Specialty care provided includes initial and follow-up assessments/evaluations, prescribing protocol medications/management modalities and ordering follow-up services. The NP/PA provides pain management education and leads policy and procedure development for this targeted population. The NP/PA monitors patient outcomes and initiates/participates in quality improvement activities. This role serves as a primary liaison for all disciplines and services interfacing with the Pain Center. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty. Other duties may be assigned. Develops evidence based protocols/ procedures and guidelines for patients undergoing outpatient pain management therapy; mentors others in this development. Complete assessment of referred patient to include a medical history and physical, detailed account of pain history and review of medication management therapies. Identifies abnormal findings and reports these potential risks to the associated pain medicine physician and referring physician. Participates in the assessment of patient and family educational needs and assists in the planning and implementation of the associated teaching plan. Completes patient reassessments and routinely monitors progress toward expected outcomes. Presents case reviews to the Pain Management Team and provides documentation of findings and recommendations. Apply expert knowledge of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches for management of pain symptoms. Assesses patient support systems and makes appropriate referrals for support resources, counseling and psychosocial care. Act as a role model to nursing staff by demonstrating clinical and theoretical expertise, critical thinking and innovation in pain management therapy. Ensures staff compliance with established standards of care and provides input to improve clinical practice. Participates in Performance Improvement activities by identifying areas needing improvement and taking action to improve, trend, and report through PI process.

What your background should be

Proven interpersonal skills with strong facilitation, conflict resolution and negotiating skills to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians and other health care team members. Able to maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated flexibility and dedication to team involvement. D.C. licensure as a NP or Physician Assistant is necessary. Current ANCC certification or Current NCCPA certification is required. Capable of accepting new challenges and developing programs from start to finish. Self-directed, with sound decision making, written and verbal communication skills.

Required Schooling / Training

Master degree in nursing or physician assistant and completion of an approved course of study as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
