What you'll be doing
- The job of Dispatcher exists for coordinating the district transportation routing and dispatching functions, which include development of bus routes and extra trips, daily dispatching, and associated record keeping. The Dispatcher is to work collaboratively with supervisors, and other transportation clerical support members to ensure the safe transportation of students and functionality of the department. The duties listed below may be the sole responsibility of the Dispatcher or shared by office staff and supervisors to accomplish the objective. Management based on the need to ensure safe return of buses and delivery of students determines the hours associated with this position. Create routes, assign bus drivers to routes, revise routes, and determine bus stop locations. Assign substitute drivers as needed to cover routes in the absence of regular drivers. Instruct substitute drivers on routes, schedules, and other necessary information needed for them to perform efficiently. Develop and monitor bus routes for regular education and kindergarten to make efficient use of the district resources. Produce bid sheets, trip bidding, and necessary record keeping. Assign vehicles and maintain database for audit and maintenance purposes. Check out gas credit cards, route changes into trans-finder, student lists by route. Assist with two-way radio and telephone communication. Assist parents and members of the public. Other related duties as assigned.
What your background should be
- Five years of experience in dispatching vehicles for a large transportations system, using computerized routing software, GPS system and assigning work. Knowledge of laws pertaining to safe pupil transportation. Valid Washington state school bus driver authorization or ability to successfully complete training program and obtain appropriate endorsements. Three years of experience using computers in daily, frequent job responsibilities. Typing, keyboarding and filing skills. Ability to work effectively and accurately under stressful conditions, communicate effectively both orally and in writing with drivers and other district personnel, communicate respectfully and calmly with parents, especially in emergency situations and maintain confidentiality. Vast knowledge about the Olympia area is a preferable quality.
