What you'll be doing

The social worker is responsible to coordinate services to patients evaluated in the emergency department for medical detoxification from alcohol. The candidate will participate in completing assessments. S/he will provide case management services as required. Act as liaison to medical staff providing alcohol detoxification services and ensure that appropriate adjunct referrals initiated. The applicant will utilize motivational interviewing techniques and help enroll patients in appropriate substance abuse treatment. S/he will arrange for and coordinate care with community programs and resources as needed. The incumbent will also assist in data collection related to the operations, efficacy, and outcome of the alcohol detoxification program. Individual will work collaboratively with nonprofessionals, professionals from all disciplines, and across a number including the emergency department, domiciliary, community care, substance abuse programs. S/he will help to identify and resolve gaps in services and problems with service deliver in order to ensure a well-coordinated and comprehensive continuum of care.

What your background should be

The candidate must have US citizenship. S/he should have English language proficiency (written and spoken). A physical examination prior to employment may be required. GS-11 social work as defined in VA handbook 5005, part II, Appendix G39, and social worker qualification standard GS-185 veterans health administration required. S/he should have the ability to coordinate services, ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team. Ability to independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. This job requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological) and the differential influences of the environment, society and culture. Knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This job requires independent judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving or crisis intervention techniques. Ability to provide counseling independently and psychotherapy services to individuals, groups, and families. Social workers must practice within the bounds of their license or certification. The incumbent should have knowledge and skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking, especially those programs in use by the company.
