What you'll be doing

The purpose of this position is to prepare hard-of-hearing students for college or the world by providing services and instruction which allow students to develop their skills to be the best of their ability. The person filling this position may teach a range of curriculum levels depending on the needs of the assigned students each year. Working with active deaf and hard-of-hearing children throughout the day. May be required to supervise students during special activities. May work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems with whom physical restraint techniques may need to be used. May work with and train teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Walks around and stands a great deal of the time in order to instruct and assess effectively.

What your background should be

At this institution, staff having significant contact with students must possess effective American Sign Language (ASL) skills. All staff at OSD must possess some level of ASL skill in order to make OSD a communication-accessible environment. Staff are expected to sign at all times when deaf students or staff are present or in the vicinity, regardless of whether you are directly involved in the conversation. This includes the campus grounds as well as inside buildings. The expected level for a Teacher is 3. The minimum at hire is 2.
